A Sprinkle of Fairy Dust.

It’s that time of year again, time for Tiny Turkey Dinner. TTD is an annual event we hold on Boxing Day. A get together of sorts where there is lots of turkey sandwiches, lots of tasty treats and great company.

Let’s face it everyone, there is only so much family bonding you can do at this time of year before you want to stick your head in bottle of wine and not surface until you can see your feet through the bottom of the bottle! TTD for us, is a great event for this very reason. Everyone’s family is messed up in someway – so why not get all your friends together and share stories. By the end of the night you are either too intoxicated to care that Grandma sneezed all over Christmas dinner again, or you feel great because you’re better off than Johnny who’s Aunt likes to serenade everyone after a few cocktails. I honestly think that events like this are necessary for your mental health.

Normally the menu is set: turkey sandwiches, pin wheel cookies, peppermint bark, spinach dip in a bread bowl, Stoli Vodka – do you see where I’m going here people? The menu is set for the gluten eaters. So what about me? Well I thought about changing everything and making it a completely gluten free event. And then two things occurred to me: 1) I’m domestically challenged and to remake everything GF would kill me. 2) I love my friends and want them to come back again next year. So what was a girl to do? Call a cousin!

Problem solved, my cousin came over, handled all the flour – now known as fairy dust because of the way it leaves a fine mist all over the kitchen! And for the GF portion, we braved the highway and let the professionals at GF Patisserie handle it.

Okay, so why the long story if I really have nothing to say? Well, not all the problems are solved. One big issue we have is cross-contamination. We have a SMALL kitchen, like smaller then your office cubicle. So not only was there fairy dust in every nook and cranny, but come party time we have a space issue in regards to keeping things separated.

I’ve been extremely lucky that Boyfriend has adopted mostly a GF lifestyle. With the exception of separate butter containers (someone can’t keep his bread crumbs out of the butter) we really never have worries about cross-contamination. However, this event makes things different. So please help. I’m looking for tips and tricks on making sure that my food is safe and GF free. How do the rest of you who live with flour eaters keep your food safe? Please keep in mind that although all our friends have the best intentions, they will also have the best drinking speeds, which usually lowers their awareness!

Any ideas people? How do you go about protecting your food from cross-contamination in an 8×8 cell?

Discuss.
