Have Your Cake and Eat it Too! Cheesecake Cafe.

Once a month I meet up with old friends for a good old chin wag and laugh at each others expense. The planning of location usually falls on my shoulders because I am the one with the ‘issue’. This is not a task I hate doing, it gives me lots of material for this wonderful blog you have all come to love. It usually goes well, I consider myself a fairly intelligent and resourceful person – I can google with the best of them. HOWEVER, they recently gave me what felt like an impossible task. They decided to skip the dinner part and go straight for desert.

And these are supposed be my friends!

So I went on a mission. I went looking for GF desert that was not creme brule.

And what did I find? I found the Cheesecake Cafe and their gluten free pie called Silk. It’s gluten free, egg free and sugar free – it’s the universe calling you fat. So maybe it’s not the universe but it is desert. When we went the only selection they had was a lemon lime flavour. I wasn’t too keen on the flavour, but I wasn’t going to pass on yet another thing just because I’m ‘food challenged’.

Well, ummm, it was a different experience for sure. Different for a number of reasons which I will outline below:

  1. If there is no gluten, egg or sugar…then what food group is left to make it out of. I really don’t think that there were many naturally occurring ingredients in it – which may explain the florescent green and yellow colour.
  2. It giggled like Grandma’s jello and fruit salad – I think they call it waldorf salad. I’m always a little concerned when my food is more limber than I am!
  3. It had a texture that I can only describe as ‘air fluffed styrofoam’

It was not bad, I would call it tolerable and it was nice to sit and act like everyone else at the table eating desert. I would recommend tryng it out. What I may suggest, however, is that you don’t go into it thinking that you’ve found a replacement for cheesecake – but go and try it anyway.

All in all, I would call it good. Not great but good. Worth a try, even if it doesnt become your favourite desert, at least you know there are options out there for you.

I’ve had this twice, tonight and probably about 4 years ago. The fist time i think it was lemon or vanilla and it was edible but not desirable. Tonight’s was quite good. It had real raspberries throughout and came with raspberry puree….however, i went in knowing it would be its own entity, not “real” cheesecake, but….what the heck is in it? i can’t help but wonder how many calories was that?
