Friends + Fireworks + GF Beer = Great Night.
We recently took a trip to Thunder in the Valley in Blairmore Alberta. It was a day full of sunshine and a night full of fireworks – a damn good combination if you ask me! One of the requirements of a trip like this is bringing good friends. You’re going to be stuck in a car for hours with these people, and then you are going to be stuck sitting in a field with them for a few more hours. You better like them!
Another requirement is beer. Not only does it make the people you’re with, a little funnier, it also makes your grilled steak taste that much better – proven fact.
On our way out we stopped by Kensington Wine Market to pick up some Green’s. While we were there, we stumbled upon this new creation – La Messagere Rousse. For those of you who threw up a “WHAT?” like I did – Rousse is just fancy talk for Red Ale.

I was a little apprehensive at first because I didn’t much like the last La Messagere I tried. BUT what kind of blogger would I be if I didn’t throw myself on the stake for me readers?! So we bought it and I decided to give it a try. You better appreciate it!
Verdict: Pleasantly suprised. It’s still a little too fizzy for my taste, but the actual taste is nice. It’s not my favourite, but it will definately do if my favourite can’t be found. All in all, I would say it’s nice, not great but not horrible, it’s nice.

Living in Ottawa, my only choice for GF beer used to be the regular La Messagère. Like you, I was not a big fan, as my preferences in my pre-celiac days were beers like Guinness, Unibroue and many microbreweries.
When I found out about La Messagère Rousse, I was thrilled, as it doubled my beer options! The beer is easily found in Québec (IGA grocery stores is usually my source).
La Messagère Rousse is now my GF beer of choice. I love the flavour and I’m hoping the LCBO will start carrying it at one point (although they told me they had no plans to do so in an e-mail).
The LCBO did add a second GF beer, New Grist Beer (made from Sorghum and Rice Extract), but I find it too similar to the original La Messagère.

I have never heard of New Grist Beer – I wonder how long it will be before it makes it out our way? One thing that impressed me even more about Rousse, is that it makes beer battered onion rings taste a lot more like pubs ones than any other beer we’ve tried. I heart onion rings!

Caitlin – WillowPark Liquor store has several gluten free beers……..the guy that looks after the beer department was even telling me the last time I was in there that he was looking at bringing in a Japanese rice beer………I live in Red Deer and haven’t been down to check it out lately…I wonder if he would bring in the Red Bridge one too….

Hi Pam, Willow Park is another great place to find GF beer. When we go down to the south end of the city we try to check it out. Last time I was there they had mentioned the rice beer, maybe I should make another trip there to see if they have it. If they do, you’ll have to head down here and we can have a toast to being Celiac and Fabulous! Really, any reason for a toast is a good reason.
