On a Mission

Hello Kids,

Please let me begin by saying sorry for the glitches we’ve been having lately. Something about wordpress and IE 6 – oh well, that’s what the professionals are for. I’ve been told its fixed, so thank you for your patience.

With the recent snowfall and cold weather, it’s really starting to feel a lot like Christmas. As a self admitted Holidork, I’d like to think that Christmas is my piece de resistance. It really is the most wonderful time of year.

And one of the most wonderful things about Christmas is the food – and the license to eat as much as you want without feeling guilty.

Some of my favourite Christmas foods are: Naniamo Bars, Land’O'Nod Buns, Stuffing, Cranberry Sauce (on anything and everything), and Turducken. So as you can see, my favourite food at Christmas is Gluten.

It’s become my mission to find suitable replacements for my favourite foods, because Santa would not want me to suffer this holiday season – a faithful follower such as myself deserves nothing but merriment and joy. And for this I propose to you all a mission of high importance.

Your mission, should you choose to take it, is to find a gluten free Naniamo Bar that actually tastes like a Naniamo Bar. Here are a few conditions to the mission:

  1. It can definitely be store bought. I’ll drive to Edmonton if I have to. Heaven knows I’ve driven to Lethbridge for hot dogs, so whats a few hours in the other direction.
  2. If it’s one of those make it yourself deals – remember I am domestically challenged and lazy. There are just certain limitations to my culinary skills and I make no apologies for it.

So, my wonderful people, I send you forth with this important mission. PLEASE help a blogging holidork in her quest for the perfect GF Naniamo Bar. PLEASE!

Only the greatest dessert at Christmas time! The best way to explain it is they are a chocolate and custard square. I’ve attached a Wiki link. As kid I used to eat them straight out of the freezer because the layers would peel off better!

Question for you – can we pre-order some of the fabulous looking Ginger Bread cookies?

Please email for gfpatisserie@gmail.com for orders of Gingerbread cookies.

I am looking for a recipe of Nanaimo Bars and will forward to Victoria. That should not be so tricky to creat GF. It seems to be truly Canadian, I have never heard of it…

It’s a classic! The hardest part, I’m thinking will be to make sure the bottom isnt too dry. But I’m also less then an expert at this stuff.

Heads Up – Earth’s Oven makes Naniamo Bars. However, they dont taste like Naniamo Bars. So if you’re a diehard like myself, you will be disappointed.

[...] The quest for the ultimate Nanaimo Bar has been a long one – one that I had been on since December 1st, 2008. It was well worth the wait. They were just like mom’s. [...]
