Whats like putting your hand on a hot stove?
Eating at Original Joe’s in Kensington.
I’m of the philosophy, burn me once and I’ll find away to forgive you, burn me twice and I’ll fight back, burn me a third time and I’ll go Britney Spears on your a*^.
Original Joe’s poisoned me THREE times. Three separate times. Three separate meals. Three separate waitresses and three identical reactions … POISONED.
They have no comprehension of what gluten free means. They have no idea what their food is made out of, and they have no idea what an allergy means. If it’s more complicated than finger painting – they won’t understand.
They can manage to mess up a plain steak no seasoning. They can manage to cross contaminate a salad. They can add gluten to scrambled eggs. They can poison you without blinking an eye.
Before you all start writing me cranky emails, please recognize that I can hear you all grumbling: “Why would you go back over and over again – you must have a major malfunction you’re not telling us about” I don’t have a malfunction I have proximity issues. OJ’s is close to my house and it has a killer patio. Its a meeting spot for many people I know and its simply out of my control sometimes. The choices of the many can and will outweight the choices of the GF.
If you ever find yourself with the same proximity issue as me I suggest doing the following: 1. eat before you go, and if that isn’t an option, 2. Have a salad plain, no dressing, no chicken, no flavour.
Verdict: Original Joe’s hates people with gluten allergies. We are their Anti-Christ.

Brutal! Customer service is key. But not all people believe in it.
I keep nudging Victoria towards a savory side of her business. She get’s great response for her Quiche, so maybe eventually in the future….GF Bistro?

i feel for you, the need to go out with your friends will always out weigh your GF choices . Good to know about OJ’s I have gone there in the past. Sunday I had a melt down and have banned going out for Breakfast. Ended up at a place that did not have Soy for coffee (lactose intolerance) and then out of the whole menu the only thing i can have is eggs/bacon/hashbrowns and tea…. well I can make that at home and it will taste better and have coffee. Hopefully this will pass soon. I felt sorry for my boyfriend!
Love the site..thanks

Did I hear the word Quiche? No seriously did you say Quiche? Because if you did, I’m all over it like a fat kid on a smartie. I say turn that nudge into a shove and let us all in on the savory deal!
Karen, I hear you loud and clear on the break down part. It comes out of nowhere like a ninja in a dark alley and before you know it, you’re losing it over a hot dog. That was one of my ‘moments’. I LOVE hot dogs, and since I am the anti-christ of domesticity, hot dogs were a staple in my diet. Would you believe that they don’t make GF hot dog buns? (That’s a big HINT/PLEA to GF Patisserie!) I lost it Britney Spears style in the grocery store one night because all I wanted was a hot dog. All there is to do is hold on tight and remind yourself that it could be worse – you could have flesh eating disease! I might suggest trying Nellies in Marda Loop. Your options are limited but they get it, and they have awesome customer service. We eat there a lot and love it, because it feels normal. Let me know how it goes – I am as of this moment making breakfast a mission of mine. I WILL find a breakfast worth your time and money!

Good luck with the dairy free lifestyle. It’s easier than I thought it would be but I do find myself slacking sometimes and paying for it later! There are some great alternatives out there now and it’s getting a lot easier to replace dairy for non-dairy. If you need any suggestions just let me know and I’d be happy to help.
