Feel like being poisoned? Feel like being treated like a moron? Feel like spending way too much money on a lukewarm meal?

Yes? Then go to the Redwater Rustic Grill.

No? Save your money and go to A Tasty Menu.

When I was first diagnosed I was overwhelmed. It was hard enough to figure out what things in my fridge had gluten; let alone try eating out. Well, I have great friends, and they were not going to let me do this alone. One of my good friends had a good friend that also had Celiac, so she set up a dinner for all of us. I was ecstatic. I got to have a nice dinner with cool people and also pick the brain of a gluttie and learn a few things.

It pays to know people who know people!

We chose the Redwater Rustic Grill because of its gluten free pasta choices. This made it a no brainer to eat out. No having to modify, eliminate, explain and pray. This was going to be easy!

NO.

When the waitress came along both the Celiacs ordered the Chicken Fettuccine on gluten free pasta, and my friend ordered the Rissoto. The three of us then sat back, dove into our wine and had a great visit. The pasta came, I started drooling. I honestly thought that meals like this were never going to be an option for me again.

I grabbed a big fork full.

I was stopped immediately.

The other person of my kind knew something wasn’t quite right. All the times she had been there the gluten free pasta was a pene noodle and this time it was a fettuccine noodle. Something in her brain clicked and we held back. When the waitress came to the table we asked: “is this gluten free?” She answered promptly – “NO”, we didn’t ask for gluten free. Umm….yes yes we did. Both of us did. So her next retort was we didn’t ask loud enough. Umm..ya sure whatever makes you feel better about trying to poison us. So she took the dishes back and we waited again.

In the mean time the MANAGER of the restaurant approached us. Instead of apologizing for the mix up, or asking us what happened. He proceeded to open the menu and show us where it said they had gluten free pasta and explain to us that we DID NOT ORDER IT CORRECTLY. I’m sorry but what isn’t clear about two people saying: “Can I please have the chicken fettuccine on gluten free pasta?”

No Mr. Manager, you’re right. We’re just a bunch of stupid people who obviously don’t care about our allergy. Mr. Manager you are so right; there is no way YOUR staff could have made the mistake. It was CLEARLY OUR FAULT.

Well, Mr. Manager GO PACK SAND.

The Redwater Rustic Grill obviously doesn’t think things through. Somehow they had managed to reason that two people with Celiac Disease were the ones in the wrong. According to them we are the idiots. There couldn’t possibly be an error on their part.

To add salt to the wound my friends Rissoto wasn’t cooked. They also proceeded to explain to her why she didn’t know what she was talking about – um she knows what shes talking about. The girl can cook!

So if you want to be treated like an idiot fresh from the loony bin – go to The Redwater Rustic Grill.

Have you ever found yourself thinking: I wish I could eat like a normal person?

Admit it people, the answer to that question is yes. You know you want to be a normal. You want to sit down, look at a menu, and know that you are about to order enough food to feed a small village. You want to be able to squish everything between two pieces of bread, drip it in every sauce they have in the kitchen, and then wash it down with something that contains, chocolate, sugar, butter, whip cream and maybe if your lucky, SPRINKLES!

Well people, we have a place where we are normal.

A Tasty Menu is a great restaurant in NE Calgary. They serve ONLY gluten free food. And its normal food- hamburgers, poutine, pizza, chicken fingers and much much more. The desert menu is to die for, and the daily specials are always drool worthy. All items are reasonably priced, you wont have to break the bank to eat like you used to.

The staff are awesome, they know their stuff and aren’t pretentious about it. The owner is an absolute delight – she genuinely cares what you think and how your visit is going. They take gluten free food so seriously, that they ask you not to bring in non-gluten free foods for children. They are more than happy to provide you with gluten free cheerios for the kiddies – they just ask that you respect the safety and freedom of a safe GF food environment.

I simply can’t say enough great things about A Tasty Menu.

Oh wait I can say one more thing – Gluten eaters will love it just as much as the rest of us. Boyfriend never objects to eating there, and Boyfriends dad (a gluten eater) has even opted to eat there on his own volition. Its just that nice of a place to be.

Go and pig out people. Wear loose fitting clothing and take your time. You are about to gorge, and leave bloated – not from accidental gluten poisoning – but from complete and total over eating!

YUMMY.

We went to The King and I for a dear friends birthday. At the time, I was a little apprehensive, only because Thai food and gluten free have not always come together well for me.

The King and I, renewed my faith in gluten free Thai food. Not only was the food amazing, but the staff was so knowledgeable. And the best part was that when I asked and the server was not 100% sure – he asked someone who knew! Oh ya, he asked instead of lying to me and hoping for the best.

Seriously couldn’t ask for more.

There are so many choices that I can’t even begin to tell you which one is the best gluten free item on the menu. I say go and try it all. Bring friends, order as many things as you can and share.

Yes people – you can finally share food with gluten eaters!

So go, renew your love for Thai food and enjoy your night out.

GO.
