Q: Why did you call your website Glutastic.com?

A: Because, boobs+ponytail+nausea=pregnancy.com was taken.

Glutasticis a term I use to describe foods loaded with gluten that I can no longer have. As Boyfriend and I were adjusting to gluten free living we had many communication situations. Something as simple as a snack became an epic journey into label reading. He once asked if I wanted a snack – hell ya I wanted a snack, I’m not afraid to eat. When he arrived back into the living room he produced for me, nachos and cheese. One of my FAVOURITES.

Boyfriend sat down and began to munch away. In the midst of hoovering the food he looked at me with an expression that read “umm, who are you and what did you do with my girlfriend”. Why, oh why, was I not participating in this feast? I took one look at him and asked: “Hows the food? Is it glutastic?” That’s when it clicked. The chips he was using to shovel the unnatural amounts of salsa into his mouth were packed with gluten goodness. I was not making a statement against his eating habits, just what he was eating. From that time on I used the term glutasticto refer to gluten packed foods that I could no longer indulge in. Yes it’s childish, but I am not above a hissy fit every once and awhile.

I thought long and hard about what to name this site of mine – and in time I decided to turn what I viewed as a negative into something positive. Glutastic no longer had to be synonymous with foods I can no longer eat, Glutastic could be a celebration of being liberated from Gluten. Being free from the things that gluten does to me. I feel better, I’m healthier and I’m adjusting. I’m GLUTASTIC.

Q: Who is Boyfriend?

A: The Threadless wearing, awkward geek with whom I share a habitat.

Boyfriend is my support system, my equal, my love, my friend and my future. I have not given him a name for a number of reasons. Mainly because I don’t share well with others – he’s mine and you can’t have him!  But seriously, Boyfriend is a great representation for the millions of people who live with glutties like you and I. You may all call him Leader if you so wish!

Because Boyfriend chooses to live with me, he is by proxy gluten free himself, whether he wants to be or not. Boyfriend is the one who takes care of me when I have been accidentally poisoned, he is the one that knows as much about reading a food label as I do, and he is the reason that I have not crawled into a ball and given up. I want you to think of boyfriend as the person/people who you share a habitat with. His experiences are that of the ones the people you live with will/have experienced as well. It is through Boyfriend that we can all give a voice to those unfortunate people who choose to love us and therefore choose on many levels to be gluten free by proxy. If you live with your own “Boyfriend” please let them know they are not alone. Please give them a kiss and a hug. They have earned their status as “Boyfriend”!
